Your Pathway to a Development-Related Career

The Master’s Program in Development Studies of Contemporary China (DSCC) aims to understand the processes that have shaped underdevelopment, and by analyzing the developing country context, specifically the case of China, to explore effective responses to developmental needs.Administered by BNU’s SSDPP, the program seeks to combine the social development policy framework with evidence-based theories and practices. It adopts a grounded and multi-disciplinary approach to explore social development-related issues such as social welfare, poverty reduction, migration, gender, public health, civil society, etc. The aim of the DSCC program is to prepare students interested in pursuing a career in government service, development agencies, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The program is taught in English by top Chinese and international scholars and practitioners in relevant fields, and its constantly evolving curriculum, integrates lectures and seminars with field visits and internships. At the end of the program, students will possess a deeper understanding of China’s development processes and their implications, and will have gained critical skills in analyzing development policy and undertaking development research.

Partnership

SSDPP’s partnerships are continually expanding with government departments engaged in social policy making and implementation, international development agencies, global and domestic think tanks, research institutes, and NGOs in the social development field. These rich partnerships offer DSCC students scholarship prospects as well as many experiential opportunities in terms of inspiring internships, hands-on field visits, and the like.

Current DSCC sponsors include the China Scholarship Council, Beijing Municipal Government. Among many other institutions and organizations that offer internship opportunities, both China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and Right to Play organization offer internship positions for DSCC students.

SSDPP is also part of a teaching and research network that partners with many universities worldwide. Notable collaborators include (but are not limited to):

University of Southern California (United States), Smith College School for Social Work (United States), The University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong, China), University of Pennsylvanian (United States), Brandeis University (United States), Soongsil University (South Korea), International Institute of Social Studies (Netherland), Institute of Development Studies (UK) .

Rigorously Designed Curriculum

The DSCC MA is a 2-year English-taught program spanning four semesters of study. Courses begin in September and continue through July in each academic year.

Students are expected to complete 32 academic credits, including 30 credits of course work and a 2 credit thesis proposal, as well as write a final MA thesis (see below for additional details)

Eye-Opening China Experience

Gaining practical experience and applying knowledge acquired in the classroom is essential for a career in international development. SSDPP encourages students to conduct an internship in international or local development agencies, or other types of development-related organizations. Students may participate in an internship anywhere in the world as long as it is related to development work and, preferably, to China.

The internship is an elective course, which can be taken after the second semester. Students may register for the internship during the fall or spring semester but choose to do the work during a summer or winter break. The internship should last no less than 30 days, or be equivalent to the work of no less than 30 days. Student performance is assessed with a work report and an evaluation letter from the internship supervisor.

Thesis

Successful completion of an MA thesis of 20,000-30,000 words is required for graduation. Students will choose an MA thesis advisor in the second semester and, under the advisor’s guidance and supervision, select a thesis topic related to Chinese development. Both single-country studies and comparative studies of China and other countries are acceptable. Students will defend their thesis proposal in the third semester and their final thesis in June of the last semester.
